What is SEO? A plain-English guide for small business owners
SEO stands for “search engine optimization”. In plain words: making it easy for Google to understand your website, so it can show you to people who are looking for what you sell.
How Google decides who shows up
Google wants to show the most useful answer. To decide, it looks at three simple things:
- Can it read your website? If pages load slowly, break on phones or hide their text, Google has a harder time understanding them.
- Does your page answer the question? If someone searches “bakery open Sunday in Austin”, a page that clearly says what you sell, where you are and when you’re open has a better chance.
- Do people trust you? Reviews, other websites mentioning you and up-to-date information all count.
Local search: the map results
For most small businesses, the map at the top of Google matters more than anything. That list comes mostly from your free Google Business Profile: your name, address, opening hours, photos and reviews. Keeping it complete and up to date is one of the easiest wins in online marketing.
Five things you can check today
- Search your business name. Do you show up? Is the information correct?
- Search what you sell plus your town. For example, “dentist Brooklyn”. Where do you appear?
- Open your website on your phone. Is it easy to read and quick to load?
- Look at the title of your homepage in the browser tab. Does it say what you do and where?
- Open your Google Business Profile. Are the hours, phone number and photos current?
What SEO is not
SEO isn’t a trick, and nobody can honestly promise you the number one spot. It’s steady work: fixing what’s broken, writing clearly and keeping things up to date. Quick technical fixes can help within weeks; better rankings usually take a few months.
